Book Review: The Book Thief

This weekend has gotten off to a great start.  Joe and I had dinner-and-a-movie date night last night, and I ran a 10K this morning.
I got 3rd in my age group!  More on that race later this week.  Today, I wanted to write a review of a book I finished up this week.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a young adult historical fiction novel that just recently became a movie.  I'd heard a lot of good things about the book and wanted to make sure I read it before I saw the movie.

The story, set in the late 1930's and early 1940's, focuses on Liesel Meminger as she arrives at her foster home with Hans and Rosa Hubermann in a small town near Munich, Germany.  Her story is narrated by Death, who meets Liesel after her brother dies on their way to their foster home.  After his burial, Liesel steals a book from the graveyard, despite the fact she can't read.

Liesel begins to bond with her foster father when he discovers that book and begins to read it to her.  She quickly becomes obsessed with learning to reading, so much so that she steals numerous books whenever she has the opportunity (even at a Nazi-led burning of anti-German materials).  While most of the book is a coming-of-age tale, it also addresses many of the struggles of living in Germany during World War II, especially when the Hubermanns begin hiding a Jewish man in their basement.

One thing I really enjoyed about this story was the narration by Death.  You are never flat-out told that Death is the narrator, but it becomes pretty apparent early on.  The narration gives you a variety of perspectives at the same time, as well as little previews of the story to come.

I also enjoyed the historical aspect of this book.  I love history, especially the World War II ear, and I was fascinated by the perspective of German families on that time period.  Even though the novel is fiction, the author clearly researched the time period.  Many of the people, places, and things were historically accurate, which gave the story a lot of realism and authenticity.

While I loved the story, there were times that I wondered "Where is this going?"  After reading the entire book, everything makes sense and I see why certain details or vignettes were included throughout the story.  I don't want to give anything away, but I really do feel like the ending (as abrupt as I found it) wrapped everything up.

I do recommend this book to everyone, especially those who enjoy the World War II era!  I look forward now to seeing the movie.  It'll be interesting to see how they fit everything from the 550+ page book into a two hour movie.

Next up on the reading list: Divergent by Veronica Roth.
I'm only 3 chapters in and already sucked in to the story.

Question for you: Have you read The Book Thief?  If so, what'd you think?  If not, what's a good book you've read lately?
I'm always looking for good reads to add to my list :)

Friday Favorites

Well hey there!  Sorry that I disappeared this week.  It's been harder than usual for me to get back to normal after Thanksgiving, and so the blog got put on the back burner.

This has been a good week, though.  I hope it's been great for you, as well!  Today, I'm going to join in the rest of blog world with some Friday Favorites.  There are just some things that I've been enjoying lately, and they all seem to start with S!  Hopefully they'll bring you some joy, too!

Starbucks' Holiday-Themed Treats
I've been hitting up Starbucks a lot lately.  Today I tried the Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop.  Yummy stuff, y'all!  Plus, my tried-and-true holiday favorite Peppermint Mocha is delicious in the frappuccino form :)

Stray Kitty Cats

There's a stray kitty that Joe and I have been feeding, and I think we've sort-of taken him in.  We let him in the house in the evenings, and he is quite affectionate!

Special Deliveries

On Tuesday, I came home to some lovely flowers on the doorstep!  My brother got engaged last weekend (congrats to Eric and Sara!), and his fiance sent me flowers to ask me to be a bridesmaid.  How sweet of her!

Sweating

This week, I went to the gym right after work on Monday and Tuesday.  I got back to CXWORX and BodyPUMP classes, as well as re-instated Treadmill Tuesday!  It felt great to get in my workouts before heading home, and despite having stressful days, working out helped me relax more once I got home.

Stick-on Window Decorations

I love the big window on my office door at one of the schools because I can put cute stick-on window clings!  My office door is very festive and makes me smile whenever I look go in/come out!

Question for you: What's one of your favorite things this week?

Hope you have a great weekend!  I'll be back tomorrow with a book review :)

Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge Week 2 Recap

Can you believe it's already Dec. 2nd?  Only 23 days until Christmas!  Today, I want to recap last week as it relates to the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge.
Head over to Amanda's blog today to see how other HBBCers did this week!  There are various points for various activities, as well as one point for 5-7 servings of fruits/veggies, one point for 64+ ounces of water, and one point of participating on the Facebook page.

Sunday
Activity: 4.11 mile run.  Went for negative splits and I just about go it! (4.11 points)
Got my freggie, water, and Facebook points, too.  Total: 7.11 points

Monday
No activity today (late work day wrapping things up at school #1 for the week), but I earned my water point for the day.  Total: 1 point

Tuesday
No activity today either (wrapping up with school #2), but I earned my freggie and water points.
Total: 2 points

Wednesday
Activity: Went on another run.  This time, it was 3.30 miles.  My goal for the run was for each mile to be between 10-10:30 minutes, and I did that! (3.30 points)
Thumbs up for me!
Got my freggie, water, and Facebook points too.  Total: 6.30 points

Thursday
On Thanksgiving, the only point I earned was my freggie point.  I tell ya, I eat a lot on Thanksgiving, but but most of it is veggies!  Total: 1 point

Friday
Activity: 3-mile hike with my husband and sister-in-law. (3 points)
Since I got my family involved in something activity this week, that earned me 3 bonus points!  Hooray!  Also, I got my Facebook point for the day.  Total: 4 points + 3 bonus

Saturday
Activity: As I watched the Virginia Tech football game (a Decade of Dominance over UVA in our in-state rivalry!  Woo-hoo!), I completed this workout that Amanda created during the first half:
Workout Credit
I tell ya, this was a great workout!  Especially because Virginia Tech had 40 penalty yards in the first half (=40 burpees!).  Here's what I wound up with:
Point total=1.5 points.
I also got my Facebook and water points for the day.  Total: 3.5 points

Week Total: 24.91 points
Challenge Total: 28.03 + 24.91 + 3 bonus = 55.94

Highlight of the Week: I really enjoyed the runs I went on this week!
Goal for next week: Have a higher point total than the first two weeks.  I'm already working toward that, since I went to CXWORX on Sunday and have gym clothes packed for today.

Question for you: What was your fitness/health-related highlight of last week?

Thanksgiving 2013

Hey, everyone!  I hope your Thanksgiving was GREAT!  Joe and I got home yesterday after spending the holiday with his family.  We've been busy since then getting the house all decorated for Christmas.
Let's take a look at how we spent Thanksgiving.

Wednesday
Before heading to Gainesville, I got in a run.  I felt really good during this run and was excited to get the exercise before eating so much on Thursday!
We got to Gainesville, then went straight to Dragonfly for some sushi and our friend Jazzy's birthday dinner!
If you are looking for a great restaurant to eat at in Gainesville, FL, Dragonfly is one you should try!  The food is great, the atmosphere is sophisticated and fun, and the staff is fantastic.  We had a great time catching up with some of Joe's friends from high school.

The celebration continued at a nearby bar.  They had karaoke there, and I LOVE singing karaoke.  I usually go sing a song or two, but this time Joe asked if I wanted to sing "Love Shack" with him!  He NEVER does karaoke, so I jumped at the chance!  Here's a little clip:
Thursday
I got an early start on Thursday because I needed to get some cooking done!
I made pineapple casserole and cornbread casserole (double recipe) to bring to Joe's grandparents' house.  They were both ready right when it was time to leave, so I wasn't able to get in the run I had planned.

We headed to Joe's grandparents' house (which is also a horse farm) and spent some time helping prepare for lunch and catching up.
Cousin Caitlyn, SIL Katherine, me, and cousin Grace
The meal was great, the conversation was entertaining, and I enjoyed my first Thanksgiving with Joe's family!
After lunch, we took a walk out to the barn to see the horses.  There are still 3 horses there (they used to have a lot more), so we fed them peppermints, some people rode them, and took pictures, of course!
Can you tell horses make me nervous?
All the ladies at Thanksgiving
My phone was dead at this point, so I'm using the pictures from my sister-in-law, Katherine's, phone.  After our little walk/playtime with the horses, we had some dessert then headed back to Katherine's house for a movie.  We watched The Heat, which is incredibly funny!  You need to see it if you haven't!

Friday
We got a slow start to our Friday, but I got a lot done thanks to some online Black Friday deals!  Thankfully, Joe and I are almost done with our Christmas shopping!
Once we got some lunch, Joe, Katherine, and I went for a hike at the Alachua Sink La Chua Trail.  The trail is 3 miles long and goes through a prairie around the sink.  It was a beautiful day with great scenery!
I got quite freaked out when we saw huge alligators that were right beside the trail!
We had a great time on our hike, and it was very nice to get some exercise after all the food.
For dinner, we had a Friendsgiving party with one of Joe's friends from high school.  His fiance cooked up some Thanksgiving favorites, and we ate well while catching up.  Afterward, we had a low-key evening just talking and watching some basketball games with Joe's mom and friends.

Saturday
We had another slow start to the day, then packed up our things and went on our way.  We stopped by the Tangled Oaks Winery on the way home and picked up our favorite wines from our visit in May.

The rest of the day was spent watching football (both our teams won!  Yay!) and babysitting the same 3 kids we watched back in April.  What a fun and well-behaved bunch!

There you have it!  Thanksgiving weekend in a nutshell.  We've been busy today getting things ready to get back to the grind.  Only 3 more weeks of schools before time for Christmas!

Question for you:  What was the highlight of your holiday week/end?
I think the highlight for me was spending time with the in-laws and sharing in their traditions.  I missed being with my family, but I really enjoyed seeing his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
