Thanksgiving 2012

After a few days in Virginia with family, it's nice to be back in Florida!  My grandparents live in a very small town in southwestern Virginia, and it was nice to get away for a few days, see family, eat a lot, and go to a Virginia Tech football game.  Sadly, I don't have many pictures, but here's a little recap.

Thursday
Thanksgiving day!  Since both of my parents' parents live in the same town, we do Thanksgiving meal with my dad's family at lunch and my mom's family at dinner.  Yes, that is a LOT of eating!

Lunch consisted of turkey, a mixed veggie casserole, corn, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, and a roll.  Everything was delicious, especially the mixed veggie casserole!  My aunt Susan makes it, and I don't know what she does but I always go back for more!  My grandmother got some red velvet cake for dessert (it's my favorite!), so I had a slice of that for dessert.

After lunch settles, my dad's side of the family heads to the local park for the annual Older Siblings vs. Younger Siblings family football game.  Joe joined the Older Siblings team this year and experienced just how competitive this game can get!  Unfortunately, the Older Siblings 2-year win streak came to an end when the Younger Siblings beat us after 4 overtimes.  My uncle at all-time QB didn't throw any interceptions, which led to a tie as each team scored each time we had the ball.  While we didn't win, I had a blast as always!

Dinner at my mom's parents consisted of turkey, sweet potato casserole, green beans, stuffing, creamed potatoes, and a roll.  I went back for seconds on sweet potato casserole...I'm obsessed with sweet potatoes right now!  My mom's mom always makes from-scratch cakes and had my favorite: Sock-it-to-Me cake.  It's like a cinnamon coffee cake, but it is TO DIE FOR.  Our tradition at my mom's parents house is to go around the dinner table and say what we are thankful for.  Pretty standard, but it's always good to share with everyone.

Overall, a happy Thanksgiving as always!
Adorable little treat from one of my students!
Friday
A day of leftovers.  To be honest, I much prefer the vegetables served on Thanksgiving than the meat/bread.  I loaded my plate at both houses with the leftover veggies and was quite content all day.  We caught some football games, played board games, and just enjoyed spending time together.

Saturday
I'd been waiting for Saturday for a long time.  As a die-hard Virginia Tech football fan who attended every home game since November 2004 (until this season), I was SO EXCITED to head up to Blacksburg, VA for the Virginia Tech-UVA football game!

It was a high of 35 degrees with a wind chill in the 20's, but I could have cared less.  I was happy to be back in Lane Stadium cheering on my Hokies!

Our tailgate, while we were sitting in the van, consisted of Subway breakfast flatbreads and Subway subs after the game.  I had my mom bring baby carrots so that we had something healthy to munch on as well.

The Hokies won the game 17-14 (thank goodness!), and I got to see some of my favorite people (yes, that's you Amanda and Krista!!).

We got back to my mom's parents house, and my grandmother had a huge pot of homemade vegetable soup on the stove.  It was AMAZING.  I'm telling you what, it was full of vegetables and was incredibly tasty.  I asked her how she made it so that I could make it later!  We hit the hay early so that we could wake up at the crack of dawn to get to the airport.

...and that brings us to today!  I started the day at 4:40 a.m. in order to get to the airport, and spent the day traveling, running errands, doing laundry, running 6.5 miles, and catching up on the blog!  All thanks to this wonderful cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee to get my up and running for the day.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, I'm ready for the Christmas season!!  I was so happy to see this Christmas themed coffee cup and can't wait to get the house all decorated sometime this week :)

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, traveled safely to/from your families, and is looking forward to the next holiday season.  Check out my recap of the HBBC Week 1 if you want something else to read.

Question of the Day: How was your Thanksgiving?  Share something fun you did with me!
